Today long term Arsenal favourite Terry Henry passed his medical and joined Barcelona for £16 million, a move that not even the most ardent gooner could deny him. He remains the club record goalscorer with 174 goals from 254 appearences, including an amazing 100 league goals at Highbury. With France, he has won the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000. In recognition of his abilities, Henry has been twice nominated for the FIFA World Player of the Year, and has twice received the Barclays Premiership player of the season award. Today the premiership morns the loss of an all time great...
Today... Tottenham's £16 million swoop for Darren Bent is being held up because Charlton are holding out for more money.... Darren Bent will
never win either the Euro Cup or World Cup with England, Darren Bent will probably never play upfront for England for a sustained amount of time!! He will probably never win the Barclays Premiership player of the season once, let alone twice.. He will DEFINATELY never get nominated for the FIFA world player of the year... Personally I hope that no one pays this ridiculous amount of money for a reasonable striker and he rots in the championship next year..
I realise that Henry is much older but my point is that with all the money in the premiership these days, is it right for clubs to expect bigger teams to pay over the odds for their prize assets just because they can afford it? Is Bent really worth £18m?... Reo-Coker £12m??? SWP - £21m? Ashley Young - £10m?? !!!The list could go on.. THE ANSWER IS CLEARLY NO!!!!!! Are these inflated prices just because they are deemed good English prospects? Is this just a natural economic way of balancing the wealth in a supply / demand ilk? (was rubbish at economics at school!) Am i only bothered because this is the first season in the last 10 years that Villa have had some money to spend!?
Any thoughts please?

My first thought was you didn't write that so where did you copy it from.
Second thought is yes its a ridiculous market and there is no way Henry is worth the same as Bent.
The only redeeming thing is that Terry is 30 and will be 31 at the end of next season... so how much can you really pay for a 31 yr old. not 16mil. not even if its henry. So there is a slim slim chance that the sit down u pedo has shipped him out at the right time and the right price. I guess the main point is that if a player really wants to leave, what can you really do to stop him apart from get as much money as poss. The other distinct possibility is that Venger is building a barcelona side for himself?!
The other end of the scale see's Bent leaving charlton and I say well played charlton. They don't want him to leave so they are putting a ludicrous price tag on him. I just can't believe any one is stupid enough to pay it.
At first I thought the Terry Henry deal was stupid, but with his age, and with venger arguably selling Viera at the right time, maybe this is too.
Altho the prem loses a great player look at the positives. Not only can we laugh at Arsenal finishing outside the top 4, but also maybe little theo will have a season up top and turn out pretty tasty?? _________________

I have to admit these particular stats came straight from wikipedia!! Couldn't be arsed, copy and paste, and wanted to get into my rant!!
If i'm honest whats got my back up a touch is not even the Bent situation, I understand entirely what you are saying..

Its when the same club who were willing to pay over the £17 odd million for Bent are expecting other clubs to meet the same expectations as their own. Reo-Coker is not a prize asset for West Ham.. The fans entirely reject the way he has treated the club last season (although he was their best player the season before..), Curbs has made it very clear he feels the same way, the player himself wants to leave for a fresh start, but the board slap a ridiculous £12m transfer fee on him just because they are willing to pay over the odds themselves.
Personally I think that money coming into the premierships smaller clubs can only be a good thing. Excluding the top 2.. West Ham, Villa, Man City (dodgy!!) , Liverpool, and Arsenal have all had some outside investment this summer and have money to spend. However, surely clubs acting this way negates this and keeps the gap between the Man U's, Chelski's and the rest (Soz Stocks, the pool are not quite there!) the same...
It was the start when Abramovich bought Chelsea... money was no object then. Now smaller buy outs have happened and clubs have millions to spend not billions doesn't mean that the whole english transfer market has to erupt into a complete farce!!!
12m for Reo - Coker is a farce!!!!!
16m + for Bent is a farce!!!!!
18million for Sneijder and Babel is good!!
Keep the faith all you Villa fans who read the Troggs forum!! [/quote] _________________ "Win or lose...we're on the booze!!!" |

This is just copied!!
from the BBC website..
Premier League denies summit call
Sports minister Richarde Caborn
Caborn wants to examine the 'fit and proper person' test
Premier League officials deny they are to take part in a summit with sports minister Richard Caborn on the issue of foreign ownership of clubs.
Caborn said he is meeting leading football figures on Tuesday amid concerns the Premier League is becoming a foreign "billionaire's playground."
A spokesman said: "We have no plans to meet with Mr Caborn at present.
"However, we're happy to discuss the legal framework currently offered by Government in relation to takeovers."
Caborn claimed he was due to meet Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore and chairman Sir Dave Richards, Football Association chief executive Brian Barwick, and Football League chairman Lord Mawhinney.
The sports minister's call for a summit comes after former Thailand prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra - dubbed "unsavoury" by an MP in parliament - is set to take over Manchester City.
Caborn said: "I think foreign investment has helped the Premier League, it's the best in the world, but I think we have to stop it becoming a billionaire's playground.
"We have to ensure the grassroots and communities from which those clubs came, are respected."
We will also look at the 'fit and proper person test' and see whether it is the right tool
Sports minister Richard Caborn
The summit will also investigate the effectiveness of the 'fit and proper person test' for club owners currently used by the leagues and the FA.
Caborn told the House of Commons: "I am meeting the FA, Premier League, and the Football League with Treasury officials on Tuesday, to look at this queston of ownership and a number of other issues.
"We will also look at the 'fit and proper person test' and see whether it is the right tool."
Caborn did not mention any clubs specifically but the ownership issue has been highlighted by the takeover of Manchester City.
Thaksin has been charged with corruption offences in Thailand and had his assets in that country frozen.
The Premier League insists it has no issue with nationality of club owners.
But the League will use the meeting to try and make it easier to carry out 'fit and proper person' checks through government departments such as the Department of Trade and Industry, and the Foreign Office.
The Premier League spokesman added: Our own 'fit and proper persons test' sits on top as an additional layer of regulation.
"As always, the Premier League are happy to work across Government with whoever the appropriate ministers may be in coming weeks."
If and when Thaksin's takeover is complete, it will mean six out of 20 Premier League clubs are in foreign hands.
A number of other clubs including Arsenal and Blackburn are also provoking interest from overseas. _________________ "Win or lose...we're on the booze!!!" |

| Quote: | Bent - above average striker who has made no impact at international level with England - £16.5m
Henry - world superstar and one of the finest talents of the modern era - £16.1m.
Those facts, presented in such stark terms, hint at the madness of the Premiership market. |

Possibly a Sex Offenders background check would be more appropriate!! _________________ "Win or lose...we're on the booze!!!" |
