Smarden Suffered the normal New Year Slump at the weekend going down to two late goals against a Hunton side that they despatched 3-1 in the cup in December.
Smarden were missing Moon but were still able to field a strong line up that meant a talented bench of Loppy, Gibbo and Dyke Snr.
In the first half the Den struggled to get hold of the game but eventually took the game with their only shot of the half a dipping volley from stuey Batt from the egde of the box eluding the Hunton Keeper.
Law man back from injury and in for the absent Moon, looked like a player who hadn't played for 6 weeks and struggled to make an impact before being subbed off for suber sub 'the fridge' on 60 mins. The fridge was appropriately suffering from a cold and didn't have the desired impact. It was his mistake on 70minutes giving the ball away cheaply that allowed Hunton to carve a shooting opportunity and for a 30 yard shot to find the net, although Kitney might well be dissapointed he didn't get more on it.
Hunton took the iniative after their goal but it was a further mistake that cost Smarden, poor marking from a corner allowed an easy header for 2-1.
It was just the kick up the arse smarden needed and they finally started playing football, with Arch gambling on taking off Matty Dyke, his last recognised striker and playing gibbs and Eels up front, but it was too little too late as the Den failed to find the equaliser. An indication in many fans eyes that January spending on a striker is needed especially with Matt Dyke set to leave to University UTD in the summer, Moon's constant international duty and Law man injury proneness there isn't enough cover.
Praying that New Year slump isn't as bad as normal, Smarden fans will flock to Cornes Meadow this saturday to witness the first game in the defence of the Kent Junior Cup which Arch's men brought home last year with a 5-4 shoot out victory over Lydd reserves.
Their first hurdle will be Eccles reserves who lie 8th in Division 1 beneath the Den with just 3 wins and a draw from 9 games but it is worth noting that Eccles first team who have 4 wins from 4 in the prem and are already through the first round of the Kent Junior, don't have a game on Saturday, so a strong line up is expected.
