This season was destined to turn into a real damp squid. What chance did we have against a steady side, who’ll no doubt, put in a few ringers. Throw in the fact, we had both Log and Gibbo out with injuries and Deano out with family commitments. All key players, I’m sure you’ll agree. Drafted in were Aaron Brown and Tim Archer, to the starting line up, with Butch, Smith and young Dyke on the bench.
After the sorry display against Malgo the previous week, which Smarden would turn up today?………. I’ll tell you which. The crisp-passing, hard-working, battle to the death, son of a bitches from Smarden, that’s who! As soon as the whistle got proceedings underway, Smarden were very much up for it. There were full-bloodied challenges, plenty of voices and the urgency, accuracy of our passing was top notch. We had plenty of chances and it was inevitable Smarden would strike first. When we did. What… A… Goal. A move which started in defence and involved the majority of the Smarden players, had the Staplehurst boys running like headless chickens. When we were bored of taking the piss, Andy Adamson was put through and he made no mistake, with an absolute corker from 12 yards, that sent the hardcore supporters in the Lower Tier of the Tim Archer Stand crazy.
1-0 up, playing fantastic football. Surely it couldn’t get any better…WRONG! With the mid-way point of the half approaching, Smarden won yet another corner. With the Smarden rear-guard making their way to the back post, the Staplehurst defence failed to notice midfield dynamo, George Dyke’s run to the near post. Moony, with the chilling accuracy of a SWAT sniper, picked him out and Dyke arrowed the ball into the top right hand corner. 2-0 and with the break in sight, Staplehurst had their first big chance. The corner was swung in and their big defender produced a superb header, to send the ball towards the corner of the goal. 2-1 surely. Normally, yes, but what a goalkeeper Aaron is. Diving the length of the goal, to somehow tip the ball past the post. Save of the season without question. The Staplehurst defender even congratulating him at half-time.
The second-half, Staplehurst had to push forward. They threw everything they could at us, but their only reward was a dodgy penalty. We had our fair share of chances too. The pick being a strike from right-back Lee, who from 40 yards, let loose with a shot that resembled a Saturn 5 rocket, towards the top corner, which the fortunate Staplehurst keeper, turned onto the post. Overall, the better team won. Final score 2-1, to the ‘Den. Up next is County Opponents, Woodstock Park, away, in the semis. After the season we’ve had, we’re 180 minutes from cup glory. Unbelievable, but true. Two more performances like this in the cup and it could very well happen. We owe it to the fantastic crowd that turned up on Monday, the chance to dream……..
