Smarden struggled yet again in their final league game of the season against high flying Eccles. With several players missing Arch called upon reserve team players with dogman coming in at right wing back and  former smarden hitman Andy Adamson up top, with Carty, Lops, Hodges, Moon, roffey and gibbo all away.

Smarden found themselves 2-0 in the second half but clawed one back when Dave Law found Dyke Snr at the back post with a superb cross, who nodded home for 2-1. Dyke Snr then returned the favour for law man flicking a header into his path but caught a boot to the face doing so and just as law was smashing into the net, the ref had already blown and pointed to the spot presumably feeling guilty he'd disallowed the goal as Dyke was clearly 2 yards outside the box. Dyke handed the ball to the reluctant Law, who hadn't scored in some 6 games and never likes a penalty, but Smardens leading scorer kept his cool to level 2-2.

Back at the other end the eccles winger whipped a ball in that was nodded back across goal to the on rushing striker. Dyke acrobatically and stupidly lept and volleyed the ball off the line but fell awkwardly and managed to snap his humorous presumably under his own excess weight.

40odd minutes later with Dyke finally in the ambulance and Arch on the pitch instead he at least had the comforting knowledge that he'd surely salvaged a point with his goal line clearance... only somehow it didn't happen as in the remaining 4 minutes after the restart Smarden managed to slump to a 4-2 defeat.

Smarden 3-5-2 kitney, bruce, stocker, hollingsbee, eels, batt, newman (dyke jnr 60), dyke snr, (arch 86) dogman, law, adamson
goals: Dyke Snr, Law (pen)
Assists: Law, Dyke Snr
