CRASH!!!! BANG!!!! WALLOP!!!!
This may not mean a lot to many of you, or be ideal preparation for this big game. It was very funny who witnessed it though. (Hope the plan of blaming the missus worked boss!)
Ok the game. We have only played Lenham once in recent times, due to them plying their trade in the superior Premier division. That game was just before Christmas and we were thrashed 5-0. Normally playing a side that had destroyed us last time. We wouldn’t be extremely confident, but we have been playing very well and were confident of pulling off an upset. We had a strong side out. The only notable abstentees being Paul Newman, who hasn’t played since the turn of the year and who’s rumoured to playing for a Stanford Hill side, on the Isle of Sheppy. Also, Adam “Schmeichel” Roffey. There’s no information on that no-show. Plus, Jonesy, Lee and Pepper.
The game started pretty even, with both midfields thundering into challenges. In the way of chances, it was pretty thin on the ground. Unfortunately after 20 minutes, a hopeful punt forward, found a Lenham striker, who made no mistake from 8 yards. This could of dented Smarden’s confidence. Far from it. Smarden responded superbly. Absolutely peppering the Lenham goal. With half an hour gone, Smarden got their reward, with two quick-fire goals from the outstanding duo of Adamson and Moon. 2-1 at the break.
The second-half past without major incident, as Smarden had total control of the game. Then heart-break. With 4 minutes to go, Dykey was completely legally, shielding our goal, on the edge of our area. The ball was cleared. No drama. No appeal from Lenham. Then the ref blew for a penalty! The effing fringe! Delaney dispatched the penalty. So onto extra-time. The game looked to be heading to penalties, but Lenham, not for the first time, punted the ball forward and again their striker finished with ease.
At the final whistle, we were obviously heartbroken. We were the better side on the day and were only 4 minutes from the semis, before the worst decision I have witnessed on a football pitch. That’s not an exaggeration. The only good thing from the day, was we did play very well. We have to keep this form going, as up next is Addington. C’mon boys. Let’s take the frustration of Saturday, out on Addington and gain 3 vital points.
NOTE: Promotion = 2 games versus Lenham.
