Smarden off to Poor StartArchs men suffered 5-2 defeat at the hands of Eccles on Saturday. A comedy of errors at both ends transpired for the first 20 minutes as Matt dyke latched onto a dropped ball to slot home the first, Eccles equalising after Pearce miss kicked, Dyke then re-established the lead with a tame shot palmed into the net and Bruce Dyer finding the top corner of Pearces goal with a beauty to make it 2-2.A frustrated front line of Dyke Jnr, Law and Moon failed to capitalise on rare chances and with Eccles constantly pressuring, the den failed to keep the ball and mistakes were eventually punished as Eccles ran out 5-2 winners. Not the worst performance in the world but not good enough for a result and Arch will be looking for marked improvement next week. Result: Eccles 5 Smarden 2 Goals: M. Like their sunday counterparts, Smarden sit 2nd bottom after opening day of the season. With Shepway smashing 12 past ditton without reply, downswood drawing 2-2 with East Malling and last weeks friendly victims Leeds beating addington 7-3.
