The semis of the Kent Junior Cup were in sight. Having disposed of County opponents, Otford in the previous round. Smarden came up against Canterbury League outfit, Sturry. Who? I hear you say. Not exactly the kind of opposition to send fear through the Smarden ranks. Despite a number of casualties and people who couldn’t make it. Loppy, Gibbo and Adam to name but a few. Smarden will surely progress to the next round.
…………Oh dear. If life was only that simple. It was hard to believe less than a month before, this Smarden side battled like lion-hearts to overcome Otford. This really was a poor showing. After going 1-0 down to a well worked free-kick, the body language of the majority of the players spoke volumes. Heads down, shoulders slouched. It was so disappointing to see. At half time Smarden got the bollocking they deserved from Steve and Loppy.
Into the second half and Smarden showed a lot more confidence and were playing better, fast paced football. So it was of no surprise we got the equaliser. Unfortunately minutes later the Smarden defence hit the self-destruct button and we were 4-1 down. Obvious this hit our confidence and the score finished 5-1. I’d like to apologise for my part in the poor defensive display. We really wasn’t good enough at the back. The only good point from this game, is that despite the one goal, we did create many openings. Also one thing we could all learn from Carty, who rightly got the managers man of the match. Is his never say die attitude. At 5-1 down, still thundering into challenges as if his life depended on it.
Finally, we have to remember what standard of football we’re playing at. At 4-1 down, there was still half an hour to play. We still had a chance. If a side like Sturry can score three goals in five minutes, we must believe we could do it in thirty. So come on lads, this Saturday it’s the local derby versus Headcorn. Nothing less than a victory will do. Sure, they will raise their game against us, but we’re much the better side. Repeat after me…WE WILL WIN…WE WILL WIN…WE WILL WIN…

WE WILL WIN....WE WILL WIN....WE WILL WIN
Your prob a bit harsh on yourself there big man, it did seem to just slip to 4-1 but your right we did all kinda give up. We were better than that side. We made a lot of chances but didn't finish as well as we should and were made to pay for defensive errors whilst not returning punishment for theirs. Thought Deanos made some great saves trying to keep the score down. the old flapper pulled out some champagne saves!
One thing I would like to say... I admit I enjoy sundays more because we win! and there's a different spirit and no one knows why... I also admit I have thought about playing for someone else next season on sats as many others have... then I think Who can find a club that will get stuffed 5-1, go back to the opposition pub and outstay /out drink them??? no where. lets all stay smarden cos we love it.
