So here we again. Smarden versus bloody Hunton. In the previous three encounters this season, it was one draw and two wins to Smarden. So we had every right to feel confident going into this Maidstone League Division One match.
Despite this, it was Hunton who absolutely dominated the opening fifteen minutes. They threw everything at us and about the only time we touched the ball, it was for a goal kick, or Lee making a save. So it was of no surprise when Hunton landed the first blow. Their nimble number 10 picked the ball up on the half way line, rode a couple of challenges, before firing the ball into the bottom left-hand corner from the edge of the box.
To our credit, we responded well and within twenty minutes had drawn level. Some good work down the right flank from the outstanding Andy Jones, helped release Andy Adamson, who delivered a inch perfect cross onto the head of marksman Marcus Pearce who couldn’t fail to execute. The remainder of the half passed with no real incident. So at half time it was one each.
The second half started pretty slow, but it was Smarden who ran the game without creating that many clear opportunities. Under the absent managers instructions, all the subs made an appearance. Some made more of an impression than others…..Roffey.
With twenty minutes to go, disaster struck for Smarden. A hopeful punt from a free-kick was lofted into the box, but unfortunately it was spilled by the unlucky Lee Kitney and into the path of a Hunton player who made no mistake from two yards. This gave Hunton the confidence they were lacking and despite pressure from Smarden, held on for the three points they really didn’t deserve. Plus their manager/linesman/prick is a f@#$ing cheat, which made it all the more aggravating.
That’s all there is to say really. Hopefully we can produce the goods this coming Saturday, as I’m sure, I, like the rest of you, felt completely gutted after Saturday’s game.
