Waterloo, Hastings, Britain. All great battles. Now ‘The Battle of Cornes Meadow’ can be added to that list. Goals, Injuries, Controversy. It was all there.
Local derbies are taken very seriously, but Headcorn obviously take it more seriously, by fielding their strongest side of the season, in the hope of getting one over the mighty ‘Den. With Smarden missing regulars, Moony, Dyke and Log, it was always going to be close.
The game started predictably. Not many chances, but plenty of tackles flying in from both sides. It was Smarden though, mid-way through the half, who took control with two quick goals. Carty with a header. Yes. Header. And someone else, but I can’t for the life of me remember who! Sorry to that person. 2-0 at the interval and a clearly rocked Headcorn side, who spent half-time screaming obscenities at one another.
Into the second half and the first 35 mins was not much to report about. Other than Headcorn doing their best to injure as many players as possible, due to their inability to play any decent football. This ironically was to prove their way into the game, as the referee failed to deal with their moronic tactics, infuriated Smarden, who began to give away lots of free-kicks. Matt Webb tucked one of these away and with minutes to spare also converted a controversial penalty. (I barely touched him).
Into Extra-time and again, not much in the way of chances. The game did explode into life with 5 mins remaining. Adam Oliver was carried off with a terrible injury, just below the knee. Smarden had used all their subs, so they were down to 10 men. Will they just sit back and hold on for penalties? Not a bit of it. Into the final minute and a good move released Andy Adamson, who made no mistake and smashed the ball into the bottom right hand corner, to send the Smarden faithful wild with celebration. Seconds later the whistle blew. Job done. I don’t think Steve gave a MOM but Lee was outstanding at right-back and gave them plenty of trouble at set pieces.
After the game Headcorn didn’t come back for a drink. They had to get back to their caravans and shag their sisters.

Great report and for once I can appreciate it as informative as I wasn't there!
