In A Dramatic turn of events, Cupid Stunts have secured the Tenterden Division 1 title in their promotion season.
2 weeks ago bethersden needed to win one of their remaining two games, but slipping to a draw last week left the title bid hinging on the final night.
The Stunts kicked off at 7pm with a late alteration - Stuey Batt donned the gloves in for a late-again-held-in-traffic Headling. They wanted an early goal and they got it, Dyke snr notching within a few passes of kick off. It all looked good, however, 3rd placed Hit and Hope were not going to make it easy for the stunts and they quickly equalised. Stunts took the lead again through Dyke Jnr, but again Hit and Hope pulled back the deficit. In the second half the stunts upped their game and drilled another 3 past hit and hope, one each for the dyke brothers and another from the back from dave law. The Hope only replying once more with a hapless Batt claiming all three were quality strikes through players legs.
The Stunts work was done, at 7:15 they sat 1 point clear of Bethersden at the top of the table. All they could do is sit and wait.
In what could be seen as the major turning point of the night Paul Burt, turning out for Dave Law's Brazil 70, saw red in a incident that ended with Burt facing a ban with immediate effect.
Bethersden were on at 9pm and, now Burt-less, had to play against a Fat Ox side who needed the win to avoid the drop. Half way through the first half the Fat Ox were awarded a controversial penalty after a Bethersden player was adjudged to have stepped inside the box. The penalty was put away by the Fat Ox's newest recruit, enigmatic playmaker 'Rambo' and Bethersden started to feel it may not be their night. Chances went begging for both sides but eventually the Ox sealed the fait of many bagging another deep into the second half. A late penalty for Bethersden, awarded for a Rambo slide tackle, was not enough and going down 2-1 they handed the title to the stunts agonisingly finishing second for the second season in succession.
George Dyke retained his league top scorer status although he was pushed hard finishing on 16 with ever improving brother Matt close behind on 15.
Dyke thanked the fans and his players citing this as a “remarkable title victory”
On the same evening, Northern Lights wrapped up the Ashford Division 1 Title with a 7-1 victory recording the most league wins across the leagues. Matt Dyke bagged an impressive 4 goals on his debut, Steve Cox (2) and Dyke Snr completing the rout.
